Jakarta, Kemendikbudristek – Indonesia is taking significant strides towards fostering global competence among its students through the newest program of the Emancipated Campus flagship, Global Internship and Professional Program. This innovative initiative, sponsored by the Government of Indonesia, aims to prepare Indonesian students for the dynamic challenges of the global workforce by providing them with the opportunity to intern at leading companies and organizations around the world.
The program is specifically designed for undergraduate and applied bachelor/vocational students, offering them a chance to spend one semester (4-6 months) abroad. During their time overseas, students engage in practical work experiences that not only allow them to apply what they've learned in the classroom but also to innovate and creatively solve real-world problems. This hands-on approach is invaluable for gaining insights into various industries, understanding different company cultures, and exploring potential career paths.
Managed by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGHE) under the Ministry of Education and Culture (MoECRT), the scheme is initially open to students from five public universities in Indonesia, namely Universitas Indonesia (UI), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), IPB University, and Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). This select group reflects Indonesia's commitment to embracing Industry 4.0, internationalization, and emancipated learning, with the ultimate goal of preparing students for successful careers in a globally connected world.
However, it is important to note that students who have already participated in the MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) program are not eligible to join the Global Internship and Professional Program. This ensures a wide range of students have the opportunity to gain international work experience.
Furthermore, the program has established partnerships with six prestigious universities in Singapore, expanding the global opportunities available to Indonesian students. These partnerships are part of the program's efforts to provide students with an immersive experience in international work cultures, enhance their global network, and foster innovation and problem-solving skills. Participants have the opportunity to work on diverse projects within their host companies or organizations, allowing them to immerse themselves in the working culture fully.
Networking plays a crucial role in the program, with students encouraged to meet and collaborate with professionals in their field. This, combined with regular coaching by mentors, reflection sessions, and reporting, ensures that participants develop a comprehensive set of skills. These include adaptability to the computational world, understanding of smart machines and systems, and the ability to thrive within superstructured organizations and the new media ecology.
Understanding the challenges of living and interning abroad, the program provides substantial support to its participants. This includes assistance with visa applications, health insurance, and emergency funds if needed. Additionally, students receive a settlement and living allowance, including accommodation, and a return economy ticket to ensure a smooth and worry-free experience.
The process kicks off in March 2024 with an invitation for participants to apply. This is followed by a window for submitting applications that runs from March to April 2024. And the announcement will be at the end of April 2024.
The Global Internship and Professional Program is more than just an internship opportunity; it's a comprehensive educational journey that equips Indonesian students with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to thrive in a globalized world. By embracing the challenges and opportunities of international work environments, participants are set on a path towards a successful and fulfilling career, contributing to Indonesia's growth and competitiveness on the world stage.
