Living in Indonesia

Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It consists of over 17.000 islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Borneo (Kalimantan), and Papua. Indonesia is the world’s biggest archipelagic state and the 14th largest country by area. With over 279 million people, Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country.

Indonesia consists of thousands of distinct native ethnic and hundreds of linguistic groups, with Javanese being the largest. A shared identity has developed with the motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in diversity), Bahasa Indonesia is defined by a national language, cultural diversity, and religious pluralism population. Indonesia is a member of several multilateral organizations, including the United Nations, World Trade Organization, G20, and a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, East Asia Summit, APEC, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Transportation

Access to transportation in Indonesia is fairly convenient. Various means of land transportation are ready to take you from one destination to another. You can choose a linked railway system or other means of transportation familiar to most Southeast Asians but with an Indonesian twist such as motorcycle cabs called “ojek”, a rather traditional Indonesian tuk tuk known as "bajaj", and the widely available public minivans called “angkot.”



> Intercity Bus 

The intercity bus service has become the major provider of land transportation to connect Indonesian cities, either within an island or inter-island. In Indonesia, the bus companies are called P.O (Perusahaan Otobus). Indeed, the longest intercity bus service is the Medan (North Sumatra) - Jember (East Java) route with a week in total covering a distance of about 3,000 kilometers. 


> Bus Rapid Transit 

There are usually bus services within a city, such as Transjakarta in Jakarta, Trans Jogja in Jogjakarta, Suroboyo Bus & Semanggi Suroboyo in Surabaya (East Java), Trans Metro Pasundan in Bandung, Batik Solo Trans in Surakarta, and other urban cities. 



> Taxi

In Indonesia, people know about the taxi mechanism by using the online application or maybe stopping them on the road (in Jakarta, there are a lot of taxis on the road). Besides, Indonesia also has traditional transportation that is worth it to try, such as becak –horse-drawn carts. 

 

> Railway

The majority of railways are located in Java, but there are four separate railway networks in Sumatra, one in South Sulawesi, and new networks are being developed in Kalimantan and Papua. Meanwhile, the government's action to build a high-speed rail was announced in 2015 –nominated Indonesia to be the first owner in Southeast Asia.



> Plane

Air transport in Indonesia serves as a critical means of connecting the thousands of islands throughout the archipelago. The fact makes Indonesia a widely open market for air travel year by year.
